Aryna Sabalenka Defeats Kudermetova to Advance in U.S. Open
Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, progressed to the third round of the U.S. Open after defeating unseeded Russian player Polina Kudermetova with a score of 7-6(4), 6-2 on August 30, 2023. The match in New York showcased a challenging start for Sabalenka but ultimately highlighted her resilience and skill.
In their previous encounter at the Brisbane final in January, Sabalenka had to rally from a set down to secure the victory. This time, she faced similar adversity as Kudermetova initially took the offensive. Sabalenka reflected on the opening set, stating, “The first set was super tight and super aggressive. I felt like it was more about the serve and first shot. It was super quick.”
Despite saving four break points early on, Sabalenka dropped her serve in the first game. However, she quickly regained her footing. A critical moment came in the tiebreak, where Sabalenka displayed her prowess with a stunning crosscourt winner, allowing her to take a 3-1 lead. Kudermetova, currently ranked 67 in the world, faltered with a forehand error, handing the first set to Sabalenka.
The second set began with a challenge for Sabalenka as she found herself down an early break. After receiving treatment for a leg issue, she returned to the court determined. “The second set felt much better on the return game. I’m really glad that I stayed strong in that first set,” she added. Sabalenka quickly regained her composure, leading 3-1 after another unforced error from Kudermetova.
With momentum firmly on her side, Sabalenka secured the match, marking another step towards her goal of defending her title. She now prepares to face Leylah Fernandez, the runner-up from 2021, in what promises to be an exciting rematch of their semi-final from four years ago.
Reflecting on her journey since that previous encounter, Sabalenka acknowledged her growth and focus. “I know if I’m able to bring my game and fight for every point, I’ll have my chances. All I try to do is focus on myself and bring the best fight possible every time I’m out here playing in front of you all,” she said.
As Sabalenka aims for her fourth Grand Slam title, her performance against Kudermetova exemplifies her determination and skill on the court, setting the stage for an intriguing continuation of the tournament.
