Thai Monk Arrested for Embezzlement Linked to HIV/Aids Hospice

A prominent Buddhist monk in Thailand has been arrested on allegations of embezzling donations intended for a hospice supporting individuals with HIV/Aids. Luang Phor Alongkot, 65, was taken into custody on Tuesday at his temple, Wat Phrabatnampu, located in the central province of Lopburi. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Alongkot established the hospice in 1992, gaining recognition for his humanitarian efforts. The facility not only provides care for those living with HIV/Aids but also accommodates patients with other illnesses. Additionally, the hospice offers educational support for the children of its residents.

The investigation leading to Alongkot‘s arrest began with the apprehension of Seksan Sapsubbsakul, a social media influencer who had previously assisted in raising funds for the temple. Authorities suspect that donations meant for the care home were mismanaged. As the inquiry progressed, it expanded to include allegations against Alongkot. Local media reported that he resigned from his position as abbot last week amid growing rumors regarding the mishandling of funds.

Deputy Commissioner Jaroonkiat Pankaew of Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau stated that Alongkot “cooperated well with the police” and expressed his willingness to disrobe voluntarily, which is a requirement for monks facing criminal charges. In Thailand, where over 90% of the population identifies as Buddhist, monks are typically held in high regard. Nonetheless, there have been numerous instances of monks facing legal issues, including violations of the monastic code.

The Buddhist institution in Thailand has grappled with a series of scandals involving monks, ranging from breaches of celibacy to drug trafficking and financial crimes. In July 2023, police established a hotline for reporting “misbehaving monks” after multiple cases emerged where monks were allegedly involved in sexual acts with a woman who subsequently attempted to extort them with incriminating evidence.

This is not the first time that a monk has made headlines for illicit activities. In 2017, a monk known for his extravagant lifestyle faced charges of sex offences, fraud, and money laundering. As the investigation into Alongkot continues, it raises questions about accountability within the monastic community and the management of charitable funds in religious institutions.
