Becker Urges Medvedev to Seek Help After US Open Outburst
Six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker has called for Daniil Medvedev to seek professional help following his dramatic outburst during a first-round match at the U.S. Open. Medvedev faced a surprising defeat against French player Benjamin Bonzi, with a final score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 on August 27, 2023. The match, however, was overshadowed by Medvedev’s behavior, particularly during the tense third set.
During the match, Medvedev’s frustrations boiled over as he engaged in a heated exchange with the chair umpire. The incident intensified when a photographer inadvertently stepped onto the court, leading to a controversial decision that allowed Bonzi a second serve. This incident prompted Medvedev to express his anger vocally, much to the delight of the crowd, which disrupted Bonzi’s rhythm.
Becker, in a post on social media platform X, commented on the situation, stating, “We call this ‘public meltdown’ … I think he needs professional help?!?” He accompanied his remarks with a video showing Medvedev smashing his racket post-match. This incident marks a continuation of Medvedev’s struggle with on-court emotions, a sentiment echoed by elite coach Brad Gilbert. Gilbert noted, “He did the same thing after his loss in Washington DC, was a complete meltdown there too.” He expressed concern about Medvedev’s mental state, emphasizing the need for support following a series of close match losses.
After the match, Medvedev attempted to downplay the situation, clarifying that his frustration was directed at the umpire’s call rather than the photographer. “I think nothing special,” he said. “Every time there is a sound from the stands between the serves, there is never a second serve. But well, it helped me get back into the match.” He described the incident as a “fun moment to live,” reiterating that his anger stemmed from the chair umpire’s decision.
Former player and analyst Patrick McEnroe weighed in on the conversation, suggesting that Medvedev might benefit from taking the rest of the year off to reset and regain his mental composure. “Medvedev needs to take the rest of the year off,” McEnroe remarked, indicating a consensus among some experts that a break could help the 13th seed regain focus.
Despite the controversy, Medvedev received support from Australian player Nick Kyrgios, who praised him on social media, stating, “Medvedev is the best.” This public backing highlights the divided opinions surrounding Medvedev’s recent behavior and performance.
As the tennis world reflects on this incident, it remains to be seen how Medvedev will navigate the challenges ahead. His next steps, both on and off the court, will be crucial in determining his future performance and mental well-being.
