Everton Celebrates New Stadium with 2-0 Victory Over Brighton

Everton Football Club marked the inaugural match at their new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with a convincing 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on March 10, 2024. Iliman Ndiaye scored the first goal at the new venue, while James Garner added another. Jack Grealish, making his first start for Everton, contributed with two assists, helping to energize the crowd.
Fans gathered in high spirits along the River Mersey, eager to witness the first match in a stadium that replaces Goodison Park, Everton’s home for the past 133 years. Ndiaye ignited the celebration in the 23rd minute when he converted Grealish’s cross, sending the home fans into jubilation.
“It was very special. We are coming here to try and get the victory,” Ndiaye told Sky Sports following the match. He reflected on the team’s previous performance, a disappointing 1-0 loss to Leeds United, and expressed relief at delivering a positive result for the supporters.
In the second half, Garner doubled the lead in the 52nd minute with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, again set up by Grealish. His shot flew over goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and into the net, solidifying Everton’s control of the match.
The afternoon featured a pivotal moment when Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved a penalty in the 77th minute. The penalty was awarded after a handball by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but Pickford thwarted Danny Welbeck’s attempt, ensuring a flawless outcome for the hosts.
Grealish described the victory as “massive,” highlighting the significance of the first match at the new stadium. “We wanted to put on a show for the supporters. Very happy to get the win,” he stated, clearly relishing his return to form.
The 29-year-old joined Everton on loan from Manchester City to revitalize his international career, having only started seven league games last season. His involvement in two goals on Sunday mirrored the total he had in his previous 49 league appearances for City.
“I loved my time at Man City and I had a great four years there and won a lot of things,” Grealish remarked. “But as soon as I spoke to David Moyes on FaceTime, I wanted to come here and today shows why.”
Brighton had opportunities to score, taking four shots on target compared to Everton’s three. They created several clear chances, including a notable attempt from Jan Paul van Hecke, whose fierce strike struck the post. Everton’s defense, led by Pickford, managed to hold firm under pressure, allowing the home side to celebrate their inaugural victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Overall, the match was a statement for Everton as they transition into this new chapter, with fans hopeful for a successful season ahead.
