Spain Faces Record Heatwave with Over 1,100 Deaths Reported

A recent heatwave in Spain from August 3 to August 18, 2023, has been classified as the “most intense on record” by the country’s State Meteorological Agency, known as AEMET. Provisional data indicates that the average temperature during this period was a staggering 4.6°C higher than previous heatwaves, surpassing the prior record set in July 2022.

This extreme heat has exacerbated already dangerous conditions, contributing to wildfires that are currently affecting parts of northern and western Spain. According to estimates released by the Carlos III Health Institute, more than 1,100 deaths have been linked to the heatwave, highlighting the severe human impact of this weather event.

Since AEMET began its records in 1975, the agency has documented a total of 77 heatwaves in Spain. Notably, six of these have registered temperatures at least 4°C above the average, with five occurring since 2019. AEMET reported that a particularly intense ten-day stretch from August 8 to August 17 marked the hottest consecutive days in Spain since at least 1950. In a statement, AEMET noted, “It is a scientific fact that current summers are hotter than in previous decades. What is key is adapting to, and mitigating, climate change.”
