President Aliyev Receives Akhal-Teke Horse in Turkmenbashi Ceremony

On August 22, 2023, a significant cultural exchange took place in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, where Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, was presented with an Akhal-Teke horse named Taus. The event also featured performances by Turkmenistan’s national equestrian group, Galkynysh, and included high-profile attendees such as Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of Uzbekistan, and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan.
Symbolism of Friendship and Cultural Heritage
The ceremony highlighted the deep-rooted cultural ties between the nations. In his remarks, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stated that presenting the horse was not only an honor but also a symbol of the shared heritage among the Turkmen, Azerbaijanis, and Uzbeks. He quoted a saying from Turkmen culture: “The horse is the support of the people,” and emphasized that “the horse brings happiness.”
Following the presentation of Taus to President Aliyev, Berdimuhamedov also gifted a camel to President Mirziyoyev, further reinforcing the spirit of camaraderie among the three leaders. The gifts underscored the significance of equestrian culture in the region, with both Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan boasting unique horse breeds, namely the Akhal-Teke and the Karabakh horse.
Expressions of Gratitude and Unity
President Aliyev expressed profound gratitude for the gift, recognizing the Akhal-Teke horse as a world-renowned symbol of Turkmenistan’s equestrian legacy. “This gift is a symbol of friendship and brotherhood,” he stated. He further noted the strong bond between the Turkmen and Azerbaijani peoples, referring to them as “brotherly nations.” Aliyev highlighted that both nations share a passion for their respective horse breeds, which serve as a testament to their cultural identities.
The event concluded with President Aliyev commending the performers who showcased their skills during the equestrian display, expressing appreciation for their efforts. This gathering not only celebrated the historical connections between these countries but also reinforced their commitment to fostering friendship and collaboration in the future.
The ceremony exemplifies the importance of cultural heritage and diplomacy in strengthening international relations, particularly in a region where shared histories and traditions continue to shape the identities of its nations.
