Prime Minister Wong Highlights Chinese Community’s Role in Singapore Identity

SINGAPORE: During the National Day Rally on August 17, 2025, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the significant contributions of the Chinese community in shaping a cohesive Singaporean identity. In his speech delivered in Mandarin, he highlighted the community’s role in philanthropy, education, and fostering a sense of belonging among Singaporeans of various ethnic backgrounds.
Mr. Wong remarked, “The Chinese community had taken it upon themselves to champion a local identity. This had a profound impact on the development of post-independent Singapore.” He noted that these efforts not only instilled confidence and pride in cultural identity but also laid the foundation for support of policies promoting a multiracial and multicultural society.
Nurturing Future Leaders
Addressing the evolution of identity among Chinese Singaporeans, Mr. Wong shared insights from a recent visit to China. He expressed that even when living abroad, Singaporeans of Chinese descent possess a distinct identity, stating, “They never forget that they are Singaporeans.” Looking forward, he announced government initiatives aimed at strengthening partnerships with the Chinese community.
One key initiative includes a new training program designed to cultivate the next generation of community leaders. Mr. Wong acknowledged challenges faced by clan associations, such as leadership renewal and resource limitations. “We will help them overcome these challenges and keep them vibrant, so that they can continue to contribute to society,” he affirmed.
The Chinese Community Liaison Group (CCLG), established in 2000 to enhance government-community relations, will play a vital role in these efforts. Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat, who was recently appointed as chairman of the CCLG, emphasized the importance of promoting integration within the community in a meeting with clan associations earlier this year.
Collective Efforts for Future Success
In addition to community initiatives, Mr. Wong expressed gratitude to voters for the “strong mandate” received in the 2025 General Election. He conveyed that this renewed support bolsters his government’s confidence in addressing future challenges. “The government cannot do this alone,” he explained. He stressed the necessity of collective efforts, noting that relying solely on top-down policies would hinder Singapore’s progress.
Concluding his speech, Mr. Wong quoted a well-known Hokkien song from the 1980s, A Little Umbrella, which encapsulates themes of mutual support and resilience. He recited the lyrics, illustrating the importance of looking out for one another in challenging times: “As the rain gets heavier, I will take care of you, and you will take care of me.”
The Prime Minister’s message resonated with the audience, reinforcing the belief that, despite upcoming challenges, Singaporeans can work together to navigate uncertainties and usher in a prosperous future as one united community.
