Israeli Hostage Family Denounces Hamas Over Propaganda Video

The family of Israeli hostage Evyatar David, who has been held in Gaza for nearly 22 months, has condemned Hamas for releasing a video that they allege is part of a cruel propaganda campaign. The video, which shows the 24-year-old appearing emaciated and weak in a narrow concrete tunnel, was made public on the evening of August 2, 2024, marking the second consecutive night of such footage.
In a statement, the David family expressed their outrage, stating, “Hamas is using our son as a live experiment in a vile hunger campaign. The deliberate starvation of our son as part of a propaganda campaign is one of the most horrifying acts the world has seen.” This assertion highlights the family’s distress as they navigate the ongoing crisis surrounding their son’s captivity.
Evyatar David was kidnapped during the Hamas-led attack that ignited the current conflict, alongside his friend Gal Gilboa-Dalal. The two young men were attending the Nova music festival in southern Israel when they were among the 44 festival-goers taken captive. The attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 370 individuals, casting a long shadow over the region.
Hostage Situation and International Response
In recent months, Hamas has released various videos featuring hostages, including one from late February showing David and Gilboa-Dalal being forced to witness a hostage release ceremony while they remained in captivity. The current situation is particularly dire, with 49 hostages still held in Gaza out of a total of 251 taken during the initial assault. The Israeli military has stated that 27 of these hostages are confirmed dead.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza, exacerbated by Israeli restrictions on goods and aid, has led to severe shortages of food and essential supplies. This crisis has prompted growing international demands for a ceasefire. Hamas has utilized the plight of the hostages in their propaganda, asserting that both captors and captives are suffering from food shortages, and warning that time is running out for a resolution.
The David family has called for urgent action to ensure that aid reaching Gaza also serves their son. “We call upon the government of Israel, the people of Israel, nations of the world, and the president of the United States to do everything possible to save Evyatar from death and ensure, by any means necessary, that he urgently receives food and medical care,” their statement urged.
As international discussions continue regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the situation of hostages like Evyatar David remains a poignant reminder of the personal toll of this ongoing conflict. The family’s plea underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address both humanitarian needs and the resolution of the hostage crisis.
