Rovanpera Sets Pace in Home Rally Finland, Leads After Day One

Kalle Rovanpera, the reigning double world champion, charged into the lead on the first day of Rally Finland, marking a significant step towards his first victory on home soil. The Toyota driver concluded Friday’s opening leg with a lead of 4.9 seconds over Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville. The competition remained tight, with only 15.7 seconds separating the top five drivers after ten challenging gravel stages through Finland’s picturesque forests.

Rovanpera’s impressive performance included being the fastest in three of the day’s nine stages, a notable achievement as he had not led a gravel rally this season prior to this event. He took the lead after the second stage and maintained his position throughout the day. “It was a nice day, but not easy by any means. I am not really in my comfort zone at the moment, but we are pushing hard,” Rovanpera commented, highlighting the intensity of the competition.

Close Competition Among Top Drivers

Hyundai’s Adrien Fourmaux secured third place, trailing Rovanpera’s teammate by 2.8 seconds. Following him were Toyota’s Takamoto Katsuta in fourth and Finnish racer Sami Pajari in fifth. The close gaps among the top drivers indicate a highly competitive rally, with tensions rising as teams strategize for the challenging stages ahead.

Both Rovanpera and Neuville expressed concerns regarding the speed of the stages. Neuville stated, “All flat-out and just taking risks – not at all what I like,” emphasizing the precarious nature of the course. In a dramatic turn of events, championship leader Ott Tanak from Hyundai encountered difficulties when he collided with a tree during the seventh stage, placing him in tenth position. His teammate, veteran driver Sebastien Ogier, ended the day in sixth.
