Caregivers in Singapore Seek Increased Support Amid Rising Stress

In Singapore, a significant increase in caregivers seeking assistance from social service agencies highlights rising stress levels and declining quality of life. The Caregiving Welfare Association (CWA) reported a dramatic rise in enrolment for support group programs and financial aid, with client numbers in its home care program swelling from 60 to about 200 since last year. This surge indicates a growing recognition of the challenges faced by those caring for loved ones, but advocates argue that more resources and awareness are needed.

Quality of Life Concerns for Caregivers

According to the latest family trends report from the Ministry of Social and Family Development, caregivers experience a lower quality of life compared to non-caregivers across various domains. The report, released last week, revealed a substantial gap in the environmental domain—where caregivers scored 60.3 percent against 64.6 percent for non-caregivers. Issues such as access to social services and financial stability were highlighted as critical areas of concern.

Additionally, caregivers reported lower satisfaction rates with family support, with only half expressing satisfactory levels of support. These statistics underscore the urgent need for improved assistance and resources for caregivers.

Barriers to Seeking Help

Despite the availability of grants and financial assistance, many caregivers remain hesitant to seek help. Sharlene Ferry, a marketing and donor management executive at CWA, explained that cultural norms often discourage individuals from identifying as caregivers. “Many caregivers are still unaware of the help available, or they may hesitate to ask for help due to stigma or a sense of duty,” Ferry noted. This reluctance often stems from traditional values surrounding familial responsibilities.

Many caregivers do not recognize their roles as complex caregiving work, viewing their efforts merely as looking after loved ones. This misperception can lead to feelings of isolation and burnout, particularly among those in the “sandwiched generation” who balance caring for both children and elderly parents.

Ferry shared the story of a 78-year-old retiree caring for his wife. His experience was marked by isolation and uncertainty, leading him to join a support group at CWA to improve his emotional well-being. “Support groups provide a safe and supportive space for caregivers to share experiences and engage in activities such as art therapy or mindfulness sessions,” she explained.

The Need for Enhanced Support Services

Organizations like TOUCH Community Services are also addressing the needs of caregivers. The charity has reported a 20 percent increase in calls to its care hotline, indicating a rising demand for assistance. June Sim, head of TOUCH Caregivers Support, emphasized the importance of respite care and emergency planning to alleviate caregiver stress. “More opportunities for rest and reduced anxiety are essential for improving caregivers’ quality of life,” Sim stated.

As corporations recognize the caregiving challenges faced by employees, many are seeking to provide support through caregiver talks and resources. Sim noted that alongside government and organizational support, community involvement is crucial. Simple gestures, such as check-ins or social meet-ups, can significantly reduce the stress and loneliness experienced by caregivers.

Despite the challenges, caregivers often find meaning in their roles. Ferry shared that many individuals in CWA’s programs report feeling closer to their loved ones and discovering strengths they were unaware of. “With the right tools and support, caregivers can find moments of connection or even joy throughout their caregiving journey,” she concluded.
