Special Voter Registration Camps Open in Chennai for 4,097 Polling Stations

Special voter registration camps are taking place today across all 16 Assembly constituencies in the Chennai district. The initiative targets a total of 4,097 polling stations, aiming to enroll new voters and assist those whose names were removed from the electoral rolls during a recent revision.

Officials from the Chennai Corporation’s election department stated that this effort forms part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, which commenced in November 2025. The revision process led to the publication of a draft electoral roll revealing that approximately 1.5 million names had been deleted across the district. Notably, around 150,000 of these deletions were due to voters being identified as deceased.

Additionally, approximately 160,000 entries were removed after officials could not contact the voters or verify their current residential status. A significant portion of the remaining deletions involved voters who had relocated to other constituencies, either within the district or outside of it. The officials clarified that many of these individuals remain eligible to vote but were excluded due to changes in address, migration, or incomplete verification during the revision process.

To ensure that eligible voters are not overlooked, the Corporation has organized extensive special camps at polling stations throughout the district. “These camps are designed to help first-time voters register their names and enable those whose names were deleted to verify their status and apply for re-inclusion, if eligible,” said an official from the election department.

The special camps are being held at all 4,097 polling stations in the Chennai district. Citizens have until January 31, 2025, to include their names in the voter list. Officials emphasized that this marks the final round of special camps before the electoral rolls are finalized, urging citizens to take advantage of this opportunity.

New voters, individuals who have recently changed their place of residence, and those whose names have been removed from the voter list are encouraged to attend the camps with valid identity and address proof. The final electoral roll will be published following completion of the verification process. Participation in these camps is deemed essential to ensure fair and inclusive elections across all constituencies in the Chennai district.
