Special Voter Registration Camps Launch in Chennai’s 4,097 Polling Stations

Special voter registration camps are taking place today in Chennai, covering all 16 Assembly constituencies and a total of 4,097 polling stations. These camps aim to enroll new voters and assist those whose names were removed during the recent revision of the electoral rolls. This initiative, organized by the election department of the Chennai Corporation, is part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, which commenced in November 2025.

Following the revision process, a draft electoral roll was published, revealing that nearly 1.5 million names had been deleted across the district. Election officials reported that approximately 150,000 of these deletions pertained to voters identified as deceased. Additionally, 160,000 entries were removed because officials could not contact the voters or verify their residential status. A significant number of deletions also involved voters who had relocated to different Assembly constituencies, both within and outside Chennai.

Officials emphasized that many of these voters remain eligible to vote but were excluded due to changes in residence, migration, or incomplete verification during the revision process. To ensure that eligible voters are not overlooked, the Corporation has set up extensive special camps at polling stations throughout the district.

“These camps are designed to assist first-time voters in registering and enable those whose names were deleted to verify their status and apply for re-inclusion if eligible,” stated an official from the election department. The camps are available at all 4,097 polling stations across the 16 Assembly segments within Chennai.

The final date for inclusion of names in the voter list is January 31, 2025. Officials have highlighted that this is the last opportunity for citizens to engage with the special camps before the electoral rolls are finalized. New voters, individuals who have recently changed their residence, and those removed from the voter list are encouraged to attend the camps with valid identification and proof of their current address.

The final electoral roll will be published once the verification process is complete. Officials reiterated that participation in these camps is crucial for ensuring fair and inclusive elections across all constituencies in the district.
