Canada Soccer Names Kenneth Heiner-Moller as Sporting Director
Canada Soccer has appointed former women’s national team coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller as its new sporting director, effective immediately. The announcement was made on January 23, 2024, marking a significant step in the organization’s efforts to enhance its sporting structure ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Heiner-Moller will transition into his new role over the coming months, allowing him to address key priorities following this year’s tournament. In a press release, Heiner-Moller emphasized his commitment to shaping the game in Canada, stating, “Having previously worked within the organization, I understand its responsibility in shaping the game nationally while keeping Canada competitive internationally.” He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with various stakeholders, including clubs, leagues, provinces, and territories, to foster growth across the sport.
Background and Experience
At 55 years old, Heiner-Moller is expected to dedicate his full attention to Canada Soccer after fulfilling his current duties as technical director for San Diego FC, a Major League Soccer expansion club. He previously stepped down as coach of the Canadian women’s national team in 2020 and subsequently held a leadership position within the Danish Football Association, where he focused on coach education and performance.
His extensive experience includes coaching Denmark’s women’s national team and serving as technical director for the men’s national team. This multifaceted background equips him with a unique perspective that Canada Soccer hopes will prove invaluable during a crucial period of transition.
Looking Ahead
Kevin Blue, CEO of Canada Soccer, welcomed Heiner-Moller back, noting, “Kenneth is an internationally respected technical leader, and we’re excited to welcome him back to Canada Soccer. His familiarity with our environment, combined with his diverse global experience as an executive and coach, will be vital as we strengthen our sporting structure and prepare for a crucial time in our organization’s history and the management of post-World Cup growth.”
With the World Cup on the horizon, Canada Soccer is focused on ensuring that its teams are well-prepared and competitive on the international stage. Heiner-Moller’s appointment signals a strategic move towards achieving these objectives, as the organization aims to enhance its performance and solidify its standing within the global soccer community.
