Gauff Overcomes Slow Start to Defeat Baptiste at Australian Open
Coco Gauff rallied from a shaky start to secure a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over fellow American Hailey Baptiste at the Australian Open on January 23, 2024. With this win, Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the tournament, continuing her pursuit of a first title at Melbourne Park.
In the opening set, Gauff, the tournament’s third seed, struggled significantly, falling behind after being broken twice. Baptiste, currently ranked 70th in the world, appeared poised to deliver a major upset as she showcased her skills. However, Gauff quickly turned the tide, demonstrating her resilience and determination.
Gauff’s Turnaround
The second set marked a dramatic shift. Gauff reduced her unforced errors and delivered a dominant performance, blanking Baptiste with a score of 6-0. This surge in form allowed her to regain control of the match. In the deciding set, Gauff broke Baptiste in the sixth game, ultimately sealing the match with a strong service game.
After the match, Gauff reflected on her performance, stating, “Honestly, I didn’t change too much. I tried to get more first serves in. I wasn’t too upset after the first set. I was able to raise my level, and I’m happy with how I stayed mentally calm through that.”
Baptiste, despite the loss, put forth a commendable effort, pushing Gauff to elevate her game. The match provided a solid test for Gauff, who is aiming to build on her previous achievements as a two-time Grand Slam champion.
Looking Ahead
Next, Gauff will face Czech player Karolina Muchova, who is seeded 19th, in what promises to be a challenging encounter for a spot in the quarter-finals. Gauff’s performance against Baptiste demonstrates her capacity to adapt and overcome adversity on the court.
Before leaving the arena, Gauff addressed an incident involving a fan who made inappropriate comments in support of her during the match. “Hailey’s a great competitor, so to the guy who made that comment, we’re all doing our best out here… Let’s all be respectful,” she remarked, drawing cheers from the crowd.
As Gauff continues her journey at the Australian Open, her focus remains on maintaining her composure and delivering her best tennis as she strives for a prestigious title at this Grand Slam event.
