Loh Kean Yew Triumphs Over Kunlavut, Reaches India Open Semis
SINGAPORE: Loh Kean Yew achieved a significant milestone on January 16, 2024, by defeating Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the world number two, in a thrilling encounter at the India Open. This victory marks Loh’s first win over Kunlavut since 2015, advancing him to the semi-finals of the tournament. The match, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, concluded with scores of 14-21, 21-15, 21-17 after a gripping 70 minutes of play.
The Singaporean, seeded eighth in the tournament, displayed remarkable composure throughout the match. His last victory against Kunlavut came during the 2015 Thailand International Challenge, making this win particularly meaningful for Loh. He will next face Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie, the world number four, who has proven to be a challenging opponent for Loh in the past, with an 0-8 head-to-head record.
Challenging Conditions at the Tournament
Loh’s journey to the semi-finals has not been without its difficulties. During his round-of-16 match against India’s HS Prannoy, the game was interrupted twice due to bird droppings landing on the court, a situation that has drawn criticism from various players regarding the tournament’s conditions. Despite losing the first game to Prannoy, Loh rallied to secure victory with scores of 18-21, 21-19, 21-14.
Players have voiced their concerns about the playing conditions at the India Open, including Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, who withdrew from the tournament, citing “extreme pollution” in Delhi as a significant factor affecting performance. The challenges presented by the environment have added an extra layer of complexity for competitors trying to navigate their way through the rounds.
As Loh prepares for the semi-finals, anticipation builds for a match against Christie, where he will aim to break his losing streak against another formidable opponent. The upcoming clash promises to be pivotal for Loh’s aspirations in the tournament, as he seeks to secure his place in the finals.
