Sinner and Alcaraz Set to Shine in Australian Open Men’s Draw
Defending champion Jannik Sinner enters the 2025 Australian Open as the bookmakers’ favourite to secure his third consecutive title. The tournament, set to begin on January 15, features a potential showdown between Sinner and world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who is eager to capture his first Australian Open crown. This “Sincaraz” rivalry has dominated the tennis scene, with the pair having claimed all four Grand Slam titles last year.
A victory for Sinner would mark his fifth Grand Slam title, making him the first player since Novak Djokovic to win the Australian Open three times in a row, a feat accomplished from 2019 to 2021. For the 22-year-old Alcaraz, triumphing in Melbourne would not only add a seventh major trophy to his collection but also make him the youngest player to achieve a career Grand Slam, surpassing the long-standing record of Don Budge.
Both players have been performing at an elite level, and their preparations for the tournament reflect their status. While lower-ranked competitors faced the sweltering heat during warm-up events in Australia, Sinner and Alcaraz arrived on a private jet from an exhibition match in Seoul, appearing refreshed and ready for the competition.
Alcaraz concluded a stellar 2025 season atop the world rankings, while Sinner defended his title at the ATP Finals, defeating Alcaraz in the final in front of enthusiastic home fans in Turin. The Italian faces Hugo Gaston of France in the opening round, with a focus on adding unpredictability to his serve to keep pace with Alcaraz’s explosive style.
Alcaraz, who plays against Australian Adam Walton in his first match, expressed a strong desire to win the Australian Open, stating that holding the trophy is more important to him than reclaiming titles at the U.S. and French Opens. Despite his success elsewhere, Alcaraz has struggled in Australia, with quarter-final exits in the past two years being his best results. This year, he arrives with a new challenge after parting ways with his long-time coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, who played a key role in his development as a player.
While the Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry is expected to dominate, Novak Djokovic remains a formidable contender, even at 38 years old. He is pursuing a record-extending 11th Australian Open title and a milestone 25th Grand Slam title, which would place him ahead of Margaret Court on the all-time list. Djokovic defeated Alcaraz in the quarter-finals last year but retired from the semi-finals due to injury against Alexander Zverev. Despite his mental fortitude, the physical toll of his lengthy career raises questions about his ability to compete against the younger champions in best-of-five-set matches.
In the broader context of the men’s draw, the gap between Sinner and Alcaraz and the rest of the field appears stark. World number three Zverev reached the finals last year but fell to Sinner and ended 2025 with just one title. Daniil Medvedev, a three-time finalist at the Australian Open, is currently outside the top ten yet enters the tournament with momentum after winning in Brisbane. Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime has shown promise, while unseeded Polish player Hubert Hurkacz is making a comeback after a long injury layoff.
Despite these challengers, breaking the stronghold of Sinner and Alcaraz seems a daunting task. If Sinner triumphs, his reign may evoke memories of Djokovic’s dominance. Conversely, should Alcaraz secure his first title in Melbourne, he will conquer a significant milestone in his career, paving the way for a potential calendar Grand Slam. Regardless of the outcome, the men’s draw points towards an exciting chapter in the ongoing “Sincaraz” era.
