Singapore Authorities Seize Over 500kg of Cannabis at Port
On January 3, 2024, authorities in Singapore confiscated more than 500 kg of cannabis from a 20-foot container at the Pasir Panjang Scanning Station. The seizure occurred after the container was flagged for enhanced checks based on information received by Singapore Customs.
The operation was carried out by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in collaboration with the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB). During routine inspections, officials detected irregularities in the scanned images of the container. Upon further examination, they discovered a packet containing a brownish substance believed to be a controlled drug.
Details of the Seizure
Subsequent checks revealed a total of 902 packets of cannabis, with a combined weight of approximately 509 kg. Authorities reported that initial investigations indicated the drugs were in transit through Singapore, destined for another country. The investigation is ongoing, with officials working to trace the source and intended destination of the shipment.
Under Singaporean law, importing or exporting more than 500 g of cannabis can result in severe penalties, including the death penalty. The authorities emphasized their commitment to combating drug trafficking and maintaining border security.
The ICA stated that it will continue to utilize advanced technology and data analytics to enhance its detection capabilities. In addition, the agency plans to collaborate with various organizations to conduct thorough security checks at checkpoints. These efforts aim to prevent the smuggling of drugs, weapons, explosives, and other contraband across Singapore’s borders.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to protect the nation from illegal substances and ensure public safety.
