Darren Lim Explores Bangladesh’s Train Journey, Fears for Safety
Singaporean actor Darren Lim is currently featured as one of the eight hosts of the documentary series Rail Life Story, which highlights personal narratives from different regions through train travel. In his segment, Lim journeys to Bangladesh, a country known for its dense population and significant economic challenges. As he prepares for the journey, Lim’s wife, actress Evelyn Tan, expresses her concerns about his safety during these risky travels.
In Bangladesh, particularly in the days leading up to Eid, train travel becomes a chaotic experience. Overcrowding is so severe that some passengers, unable to secure tickets, resort to climbing onto train roofs just to reach their destinations. Lim accompanied a leather craftsman and his family of seven on a grueling nine-hour journey from Dhaka back to their hometown. He described the scene as one often regarded as a “spectacle,” with thousands of individuals climbing atop the train cabins.
Lim noted, “We’ve seen such sights on the news many years ago, but the local authorities have been determined and continuously working to prevent people from doing this.” Although he witnessed passengers climbing on top of trains, he found the reality less terrifying than he had imagined. Still, he felt conflicted about the experiences documented in the series, acknowledging the risks involved. For locals, what may seem like “just climbing a train roof” is a matter of risking their lives to return home.
Despite the challenging conditions, including poor sanitation in certain areas, Lim managed to avoid any health issues during his travels. He attributes this success to experience gained from previous trips to remote regions of Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines. “If the place isn’t challenging, they wouldn’t send me there,” he joked, adding that he generally has a strong stomach as long as he avoids iced water. His willingness to eat local food, even in rural areas, has contributed to his resilience.
Lim’s adventurous spirit often leaves his wife worried when he embarks on such journeys. She frequently tries to dissuade him from visiting locations deemed more “dangerous.” Yet, Lim reassures her, stating, “You have to trust me. Until I reach my destination, I am Superman.” He emphasizes that he will take care of himself and those around him during his travels.
This exploration into the lives of everyday people through train travel sheds light on the resilience and struggles faced by communities in Bangladesh. Lim’s journey not only captures the essence of these experiences but also highlights the emotional toll it takes on him and his family.
