Over 3 Million Pilgrims Attend Magh Mela 2026 in Prayagraj
The Magh Mela 2026 commenced in Prayagraj with over 3 million devotees participating in the first ‘Shahi Snan’, a sacred bathing ritual at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. On the auspicious day of Paush Purnima, approximately 31 lakh pilgrims arrived to take a holy dip, marking the official beginning of this significant religious gathering.
Saumya Agarwal, the Divisional Commissioner, confirmed that the initial bathing ceremony proceeded without incident. “Yesterday was the first auspicious bath of Paush Purnima, and the bathing ritual was completed successfully,” she stated. “All the arrangements were in order… Today, there is a huge crowd of devotees at the fair, and the fair has officially begun.”
By Saturday afternoon, the attendance was remarkable, with about 24 lakh individuals having taken a dip in the Ganges. The event drew pilgrims not only from Prayagraj but also from cities across India. For instance, in Varanasi, 1 million devotees participated at various ghats, while 5.5 lakh gathered in Ayodhya and 2.5 lakh in Mathura for the ritual bath.
Devotees Praise Administrative Arrangements
Many pilgrims commended the organization of the event. Shailesh Kumar Pathak, a visitor from Pratapgarh, remarked, “We came here for the ‘Shahi Snan’, and the arrangements are very good.” Another devotee from Banaras echoed similar sentiments, appreciating the well-organized facilities that enabled a smooth experience.
The Magh Mela, celebrated annually, spans 45 days and includes multiple ritual baths, known as snans. The festival begins with Paush Purnima and concludes on Mahashivaratri, incorporating six key bathing days during this period. These rituals include significant dates such as Makar Sankranti, Shattila Ekadashi, and Mauni Amavasya, each holding special spiritual meaning for participants.
Significance of the Magh Mela
The Magh Mela is regarded as one of the largest religious gatherings in India, attracting millions of devotees seeking spiritual renewal and blessings. The event transforms into the Kumbh Mela every four years and into the Maha Kumbh Mela every twelve years, further amplifying its importance.
The vibrant atmosphere at Prayagraj during this time reflects the deeply rooted traditions and beliefs of the Hindu community, making it a significant pilgrimage for spiritual seekers. As the festival progresses, the number of attendees is expected to grow, showcasing the enduring allure of this ancient cultural event.
With each passing year, the Magh Mela continues to be a testament to faith, community, and the rich tapestry of Indian spirituality, drawing people from all walks of life to partake in its sacred rituals.
