De Mevius Takes Dakar Lead as Al-Rajhi Faces Penalties

The Dakar Rally shifted dramatically on January 4, 2024, as Belgium’s Guillaume de Mevius seized the lead following a challenging start for defending champion Yazeed Al-Rajhi. The Saudi driver faced significant penalties totaling 16 minutes, primarily due to missing a waypoint and speeding, which left him nearly 29 minutes behind de Mevius after the first full stage of the event.

Al-Rajhi’s struggles came on home soil, where expectations were high. With 12 stages remaining in this grueling endurance competition, the situation remains fluid. In second place, Nasser Al-Attiyah, a five-time Dakar winner from Qatar, trailed de Mevius by just 40 seconds, driving for the Dacia Sandriders team.

“We had a good pace and could have pushed harder, but when we saw (Dacia teammate) Sebastien Loeb with two flat tyres, we decided to be cautious and avoid puncturing ourselves,” Al-Attiyah explained, highlighting the strategic decisions teams must make during the rally.

With Martin Prokop of the Orlen Jipocar team securing third place, the competition remains fierce. Prokop completed the 305 km (190 miles) stage around Yanbu along the Red Sea coast, while Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom finished fourth driving a Ford Raptor.

Motorcycle Category Update

In the motorcycle category, Spanish rider Edgar Canet maintained his lead, finishing ahead of teammate Daniel Sanders from KTM. American Ricky Brabec claimed third place riding a Honda. Notably, Botswana’s Ross Branch was the fastest on two wheels during the 305 km special stage but incurred a six-minute penalty for speeding, complicating his standings.

As the rally progresses through the diverse terrains of Saudi Arabia, competitors will continue to navigate not only the physical challenges but also the strategic elements that play a crucial role in determining the overall standings.
