Singapore Voices Concerns Over US Military Action in Venezuela

Singapore has expressed its grave concerns regarding the recent military intervention by the United States in Venezuela, which took place on January 3, 2024. The US carried out a sudden pre-dawn operation that reportedly involved special forces capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife while conducting air strikes in and around the capital, Caracas. Following the operation, Maduro was taken out of the country.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Singapore emphasized the nation’s commitment to international law and the principles outlined in the UN Charter. These principles safeguard the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of all states, particularly smaller nations. The MFA reiterated Singapore’s longstanding opposition to actions that contravene international law, including foreign military interventions.

Calls for Restraint and Peaceful Resolution

The MFA urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the escalating situation in Venezuela. The ministry confirmed that there are currently no Singaporeans registered with it in Venezuela and advised citizens to defer all travel to the South American country.

During a press conference on the same day, US President Donald Trump stated that the US would take control of Venezuela and access its significant oil reserves. Following the operation, Maduro was reportedly transported to a US military base before being flown to New York City, where he and his wife are expected to face charges related to drug trafficking and weapons.

Uncertain Future After Intervention

While the operation’s immediate success has raised questions about the future of Venezuela, President Trump indicated that he was designating members of his Cabinet to oversee the country. He further hinted at the possibility of US troop deployment, asserting that Washington is “not afraid of boots on the ground.”

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with countries like Singapore advocating for adherence to international norms. As tensions rise, the potential implications of US actions on Venezuela’s stability remain a critical concern for global observers.

This latest development marks a significant moment in US-Venezuelan relations and poses questions about the future of governance and international law in the region.
