Venus Williams, aged 45, will make her return to the Australian Open after securing a wildcard entry, tournament organizers announced on January 2, 2024. This marks her first appearance at Melbourne Park in five years. Williams last competed in the event in 2021, where she was eliminated in the second round by Italy’s Sara Errani. Throughout her career, the seven-time Grand Slam champion has participated in the Australian Open 21 times but has yet to claim the title, finishing as runner-up on two occasions against her sister, Serena Williams, in 2003 and 2017.

“I am excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer,” said Williams. “I’ve had so many incredible memories there and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”

Williams will set a new record as the oldest woman to play in the main draw of the Australian Open, surpassing Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she competed in the first round in 2015. This achievement not only highlights Williams’ resilience but also her enduring passion for the sport.

In addition to her participation in the Australian Open, Williams has also accepted a wildcard for the Hobart International, a warm-up event scheduled to begin on January 12, 2024. She will join fellow Grand Slam champions Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu at this event, further intensifying the competition.

As Williams prepares for her return, the tennis community eagerly anticipates her performance. Her presence at the Australian Open not only signifies a personal comeback but also serves as an inspiration to athletes of all ages, demonstrating that passion and dedication can defy the expectations of age in professional sports.
