Gabon Disbands National Football Team After Africa Cup Disappointment
Gabon’s government has announced significant changes to its national football team following a disappointing performance at the Africa Cup of Nations. The team has been suspended, the coaching staff has been dismissed, and star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been excluded from the squad. The announcement was made on January 1, 2024, after Gabon finished last in their group and was eliminated from the tournament in Morocco.
During a televised address, Simplice-Desire Mamboula, Gabon’s acting Minister of Sports, expressed frustration over what he described as a “disgraceful performance” from the national team. He stated, “Given the Panthers’ performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, the government has decided to dissolve the coaching staff, suspend the national team until further notice, and exclude players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.”
The team, coached by former defender Thierry Mouyouma, had faced a series of setbacks. Gabon suffered defeats in their opening matches against Cameroon and Mozambique, leading to early elimination from the tournament. In their final match against the Ivory Coast, the team initially led 2-0 but ultimately lost 3-2 to a weakened Ivorian side. This result marked a disappointing end to their campaign.
Neither Aubameyang nor Ecuele Manga participated in the match against the Ivory Coast. Aubameyang had returned to his club, Olympique de Marseille, to receive treatment for a thigh injury. Following the announcement of his exclusion, the former African Footballer of the Year took to social media platform X, stating, “I think the team’s problems are much deeper than the individual I am.”
At 36 years old, Aubameyang’s exit from the national team may signal the end of his international career, as well as that of the 37-year-old Ecuele Manga. Disbanding a national team in response to poor performance has historically been a common reaction in African football. However, due to FIFA’s strict stance against government interference in football associations, such actions have become less frequent in recent years.
The future of Gabon’s national team remains uncertain as the government evaluates the next steps following this significant upheaval. The decisions made in the wake of the Africa Cup of Nations will be closely monitored by both fans and football officials in the region, as the Gabonese seek to rebuild and improve their standing in international football.
