Florian Wirtz celebrated a significant milestone with Liverpool as he scored his first goal for the club in their 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 28, 2023. The German midfielder’s decisive strike came after a challenging start, where he had not found the net in over 20 appearances since his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool secured Wirtz’s services in June for a reported fee of 100 million pounds (approximately $135 million), with an additional 16 million pounds available in performance-related bonuses. Manager Arne Slot expressed his confidence in Wirtz’s potential, stating that the young midfielder will continue to improve and contribute to the team’s success.

Slot Praises Wirtz’s Progress

After the match, Slot acknowledged the pressure Wirtz faced and described the joy visible in the player’s reaction following his goal. “I’m quite sure it was a relief for him. This I could see after his reaction after he scored the goal – and the same I saw with his teammates. They were really happy for him,” Slot told reporters.

The Dutch manager emphasized that while statistics often dominate discussions in football, they do not capture the full scope of a player’s contributions on the pitch. “In football – rightly so, maybe – we mainly get judged on results, and individuals mainly get judged on goals and assists. Sometimes we tend to forget what else there is to do during a game,” Slot added.

Slot praised Wirtz’s growing influence in the team, noting that he had consistently delivered strong performances. “He’s had multiple good games for us but I also feel he gets better and better every single game he is playing for us. He gets fitter and fitter and was getting closer and closer to his first goal,” he said.

Looking Ahead for Liverpool

Wirtz’s goal is expected to be a stepping stone, with Slot believing that more will follow. “He would probably be the first one to understand that one goal is not enough. He will score many more goals for us than only this one, but I also liked his performance during large parts of the game today. I think he was special in a lot of moments,” Slot remarked.

Liverpool currently sits fourth in the Premier League standings and will face 16th-placed Leeds United in their next league match on January 1, 2024. With Wirtz finding his rhythm, fans are eager to see how his performance will continue to evolve as the season progresses.
