Russia Launches Major Attack on Kyiv as Zelenskyy Heads to US

Russia intensified its assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with a barrage of drones and missiles on December 27, 2023. This attack, which resulted in the death of one woman and left hundreds of thousands without power, occurred just before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was set to meet with United States President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy condemned the assault as indicative of Russia’s unwillingness to end its invasion, which began in February 2022 and has caused significant loss of life.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that the offensive, involving approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles, demonstrated Russia’s intent to escalate the conflict. “Russian representatives engage in lengthy talks, but in reality, Kinzhals (missiles) and Shaheds (drones) speak for them,” he stated. Zelenskyy argued that the ongoing attacks are designed to inflict greater suffering on Ukraine and exert pressure internationally.

During the 10-hour onslaught, witnesses in Kyiv reported hearing loud explosions and seeing bright flashes illuminate the night sky. The Russian military claimed its strikes targeted infrastructure and energy facilities that support the Ukrainian armed forces. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko indicated that the attack left approximately 600,000 consumers without electricity, impacting residential areas, a university dormitory, and a petrol station.

In response to the escalating hostilities, NATO member Poland took precautionary measures by scrambling jets and activating air defenses. The Polish military reported temporary suspensions of air traffic at two airports near the border during the attacks.

Upcoming Discussions in Florida

Zelenskyy’s meeting with Trump in Florida is expected to focus on new proposals to address the conflict. This meeting follows the formulation of a new 20-point plan aimed at freezing the war along its current front line. There are indications that this plan may require Ukraine to withdraw troops from the eastern regions, allowing for the establishment of demilitarized buffer zones. This represents a notable shift in Ukraine’s stance, suggesting a potential willingness to consider territorial concessions.

Trump commented on the plan, stating, “He doesn’t have anything until I approve it,” signaling his critical role in the negotiations. The plan also includes provisions for separate bilateral agreements between the US and Ukraine concerning security guarantees, reconstruction, and economic support. Zelenskyy noted that these discussions are evolving and will encompass sensitive topics such as the Donbas region and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

On his way to the United States, Zelenskyy will make a stop in Canada and engage in virtual discussions with European Union allies to provide updates on the peace plan to be discussed with Trump.
