India Sets Global Standards in Science, Technology, and Defense
India has emerged as a key player in global science and technology, according to Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology. Speaking at the inaugural session of the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan 2025 at the National Sanskrit University in New Delhi, Singh highlighted the country’s achievements in space, defence, healthcare, and innovation over the past decade.
Singh attributed this transformation to “decisive policy support from the top political hierarchy.” He noted that since 2014, there has been unprecedented focus on science, technology, and innovation, coupled with significant budgetary investments. This shift has eliminated long-standing obstacles that previously hampered India’s scientific potential.
India’s innovation landscape has experienced remarkable growth, particularly in the startup sector. The number of startups surged from approximately 300-400 in 2014 to nearly 200,000 today. Additionally, India’s position on the Global Innovation Index improved dramatically, rising from 81 to 38.
Achievements in Space and Defence
Singh emphasized India’s growing prominence in space technology, particularly through its lunar missions, which confirmed the presence of water on the Moon and achieved a historic landing near the lunar south pole. The advancements in space technology reflect a broader trend of increasing capabilities in strategic sectors.
The indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem has also seen significant growth, with defence exports reaching Rs 23,662 crore. Singh pointed out that Indian-made defence systems are now supplied to nearly 100 countries, showcasing the credibility and reliability of India’s missile and defence technologies. This has resulted in a rising international demand for these products, bolstered by sustained investments in atomic energy, space, and advanced research.
Health Innovations and Societal Impact
In the healthcare sector, India has positioned itself as a global leader in preventive healthcare and affordable medical solutions. Singh noted that the country has developed and shared Covid-19 vaccines globally, alongside exporting medical devices and implants worth billions of dollars annually. This has earned India international trust and recognition within the healthcare innovation ecosystem.
The Minister also highlighted the increasing impact of scientific research and publications emanating from India. He stressed that science is now deeply integrated into daily life, enhancing living conditions through various initiatives such as smart cities, telemedicine, satellite-based communication, geotagging, and digital governance platforms.
Singh concluded by mentioning several major national missions, including those focused on space exploration, nuclear energy, deep ocean research, and the Aroma Mission. These initiatives are expected to open new avenues for economic growth and foster youth entrepreneurship, further solidifying India’s position as a leader in science and technology on the global stage.
