India Establishes Global Leadership in Science and Technology
India has emerged as a global leader in science and technology, setting new standards in fields such as space exploration, defence, healthcare, and innovation. This assertion was made by Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, during his address at the inaugural session of the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan 2025 at the National Sanskrit University in New Delhi on December 26, 2025.
Singh attributed India’s accomplishments to “decisive policy support from the top political hierarchy.” He noted that since 2014, there has been a significant increase in policy focus and budgetary support for science, technology, and innovation, effectively eliminating long-standing barriers that had previously limited India’s scientific capabilities.
The Minister highlighted the substantial growth of startups in India, which increased from approximately 300-400 in 2014 to nearly 200,000 today. This surge in innovation has also translated into an improved Global Innovation Index ranking, climbing from 81 to 38 in the same period.
Advancements in Space and Defence
India’s prowess in space technology has been exemplified through successful lunar missions, which provided the first confirmed evidence of water on the Moon and achieved a historic landing near the lunar south pole. Singh emphasized that the nation’s strength in strategic technologies is increasingly recognized globally.
The growth of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem is another notable achievement, with defence exports reaching Rs 23,662 crore. Singh reported that Indian-made defence systems are now supplied to nearly 100 countries. He stated, “India’s indigenous missile and defence technologies have demonstrated their credibility and reliability, leading to growing international demand.” These advancements are attributed to sustained investments in atomic energy, space exploration, and advanced research over the past decade.
Healthcare Innovation and Technological Integration
In the healthcare sector, Singh pointed out that India has become a leading force in preventive healthcare and affordable medical solutions. He remarked on the country’s pivotal role in developing and distributing Covid-19 vaccines globally, along with the export of medical devices and implants worth billions of dollars annually. This innovation in healthcare has garnered international trust and recognition.
Moreover, Singh noted that science in India is no longer confined to laboratories. Initiatives such as smart cities, telemedicine, satellite-based communication, geotagging, and digital governance platforms reflect how scientific advancements are enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
Major national missions, including those focused on space, nuclear energy, deep ocean exploration, and Himalayan research, are opening new avenues for economic growth and promoting youth entrepreneurship. Singh concluded that these efforts are not only transforming India’s scientific landscape but also contributing significantly to its socio-economic development.
