World Bank Approves $700 Million to Support Pakistan’s Economy
The World Bank has announced the approval of $700 million in financing for Pakistan as part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s macroeconomic stability and service delivery. This decision, made public on December 19, 2023, is part of the bank’s Public Resources for Inclusive Development – Multiphase Programmatic Approach (PRID-MPA), which has the potential to provide a total of $1.35 billion in funding over multiple years.
The funding allocation includes $600 million designated for federal programs and $100 million earmarked for a provincial initiative in southern Sindh. This financial support follows a previous grant of $47.9 million from the World Bank in August, intended to improve primary education in Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab.
Challenges in Pakistan’s economic landscape have been highlighted by a recent report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which was disclosed by the country’s finance ministry in November. The report emphasized that issues such as fragmented regulations, opaque budgeting processes, and political interference are significantly hindering investment opportunities and undermining revenue growth in the nation.
There is potential for regional tensions regarding international financial support for Pakistan. In May, Reuters reported that India would oppose World Bank funding for Pakistan, according to a senior government source in New Delhi. This situation underscores the complexities surrounding international lending and the broader geopolitical dynamics at play.
As the World Bank continues to engage with Pakistan, the focus remains on stabilizing the economy and improving essential services for its citizens.
