Ginny Teo Seizes Silver, Achieving Singapore’s Best SEA Games Result
Singaporean muay fighter Ginny Teo achieved a historic milestone for her country by winning silver in the women’s 54kg final at the SEA Games held on December 17, 2023. Teo faced off against Thailand’s Nirawan Tangchio at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, where she lost by a narrow margin of 29-28, marking Singapore’s best result in the history of muay at the SEA Games.
This performance surpasses Singapore’s previous best finish in muay, which was a bronze medal. At just 25 years old, Teo has already made her mark in the sport, showcasing her skills and determination throughout the competition. Earlier in the event, she secured her place in the final by defeating Kylie Alyssa Mallari from the Philippines and Hoa Thi Dinh of Vietnam.
Teo’s Journey to the Final
Teo described her experience leading up to the Games as both challenging and rewarding. In a video interview with the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, she expressed confidence in her abilities despite this being her first appearance at such a significant event. “It kind of pushed me forward to strive and push myself to want to achieve more for my country,” she stated, emphasizing her dedication.
To prepare for the SEA Games, Teo trained intensively in Phuket, Thailand. She noted that this training camp was instrumental in enhancing her cardio and skill development. “It actually helped me a lot and pushed my cardio and made sure my skills were developed properly so I feel stronger this time,” she added.
A Strong Finish for Singapore’s Muay Contingent
Teo’s silver medal was not the only achievement for Singapore’s muay team. The contingent concluded their campaign with two additional bronze medals, won by Terrence Teo in the men’s 75kg category and Jeryl Khoo in the men’s 71kg category. Collectively, these results highlight a promising future for Singapore in the sport of muay.
