Tensions Rise as Analysts See No Resolution for Thai-Cambodian Border Dispute
The ongoing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated, prompting thousands to evacuate from border areas. According to David Camroux, a Senior Researcher and Adjunct Professor at Sciences Po CERI, there is a significant lack of political will on both sides to resolve the conflict.
Camroux spoke with FRANCE 24, highlighting the precarious position of the current Thai government. He noted that this fragile political climate hampers effective negotiations. Conversely, the Cambodian government appears to be using the border tensions as a means to distract from pressing domestic issues, particularly concerning the proliferation of scam centres within its borders.
The conflict has deep historical roots, often flaring up due to territorial claims over areas rich in resources and cultural significance. Recently, skirmishes have increased along the border, leading to heightened military presence from both nations. This situation has contributed to a growing humanitarian crisis, with reports indicating that over 10,000 people have been displaced due to the unrest.
Camroux emphasized that without a concerted effort from both governments, the cycle of conflict is likely to continue. He pointed out that the Thai government’s need to maintain stability and the Cambodian government’s desire to shift focus away from domestic problems are major impediments to dialogue.
The international community has expressed concern over the situation, urging both nations to engage in peaceful negotiations. As tensions persist, the prospect for a resolution remains bleak, with many analysts predicting ongoing volatility in the region.
In summary, the lack of political will from both the Thai and Cambodian governments poses a significant challenge to resolving the border dispute, leaving thousands vulnerable and intensifying regional tensions.
