US Central Command Deploys Iranian Drone Clone for Tactical Use
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has integrated a clone of an Iranian drone into its operations, marking a significant shift in military strategy. The drone, known as the FLM 136, is a replica of the Iranian Shaheed 136, a one-way loitering munition that has been notably used by Russian forces in Ukraine. This adaptation reflects a new approach to drone warfare and highlights the evolving landscape of military technology in the region.
The FLM 136, manufactured by SpektreWorks, features a design that closely follows the Shaheed 136. This drone operates using a piston engine that drives a pusher propeller, producing a distinctive noise likened to a “moped” or “lawnmower.” According to the manufacturer, the FLM 136 has a flight duration of up to six hours and is powered by a 215cc carbureted internal-combustion engine. The cost of this US variant is estimated at $35,000 per unit, positioning it competitively against the original Shaheed, which ranges from $20,000 to $50,000.
Technological Comparisons and Developments
The technology behind the FLM 136 draws from its Iranian counterpart, but also reflects advancements made by the Russians in their drone models. The Russian Geran 2, which is adapted from the same Shaheed design, incorporates sophisticated modifications such as advanced GPS guidance systems and artificial intelligence capabilities. These enhancements enable the Geran 2 to conduct swarming operations effectively, a tactic that has become crucial in modern warfare.
While details about the electronics within the FLM 136 remain undisclosed, it is assumed that its design is primarily based on the original Iranian model, potentially making it less sophisticated than the latest Russian versions. The original Shaheed drone is equipped with a high-explosive warhead weighing between 30 to 50 kg (approximately 66 to 110 lbs), with higher payload variants also available. The FLM 136 is likely to carry similar ordnance.
The integration of this drone into CENTCOM’s operations is facilitated by a new task force named Scorpion Strike, which is now actively deployed in the Middle East. This deployment underscores a notable change in the Pentagon’s approach, moving away from the “not invented here” mentality that has historically characterized US military procurement.
Strategic Implications and Future Considerations
The operational environment for CENTCOM covers a vast region, including areas such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Jordan. The FLM 136 is deemed adequate for these regions, where advanced air defense systems are less prevalent compared to Ukraine. In Ukraine, Russian forces have had to upgrade their drone capabilities significantly to counter sophisticated layered air defenses.
There remains uncertainty about whether the FLM 136 represents a mere copy of the Shaheed or if it includes enhancements that would make it more competitive in future engagements. Experts note that continuous upgrades are essential for loitering munitions to remain effective in evolving combat scenarios. Other notable systems, such as the Russian Lancet and the US AeroVironment Switchblade, which have been deployed in various conflicts, highlight the necessity for innovation in this field.
In summary, the adoption of the FLM 136 by CENTCOM not only signifies a shift in military technology but also raises questions about the future trajectory of drone warfare. As global military strategies evolve, the effectiveness of these systems will depend heavily on ongoing development and adaptation to emerging threats.
