Kristen Lin Steps into Spotlight, Aiming for Showbiz Success
Kristen Lin, the 20-year-old daughter of renowned actors Darren Lim and Evelyn Tan, is making her mark in the entertainment industry. Recently graduating from Temasek Polytechnic with a diploma in Digital Film and Television, Lin is eager to carve out her own identity in showbiz, driven by a genuine passion for acting rather than the allure of fame.
Lin has been immersed in the world of entertainment from a young age, having spent significant time on set observing her parents’ work. The experiences left her with a deep appreciation for performance. “Acting and performing have always kind of been in my blood,” she shared in an interview with 8days.sg, highlighting her father as a major influence. “I love being able to practice and hone these skills that I have.”
Despite her famous lineage, Lin is determined to establish herself independently. Her three younger brothers, Jairus, 18, Way, 16, and Elliot, 12, do not share her aspirations for showbiz. Instead, Lin has taken on various roles across the entertainment spectrum, including theatre and screen acting, film production, and scriptwriting. She notably interned as a scriptwriter for the Mediacorp English drama Provocative during her studies.
A Diverse Career Path
Recently, Lin starred in Pangdemonium’s production of Heathers: The Musical. While her earlier television roles were primarily as a background player, she remains undeterred in her pursuit of more significant opportunities. Lin expressed interest in participating in Star Search last year but was unable to do so due to her internship commitments.
Currently, she is exploring university options, having applied to several institutions in the United States to study communications and media. Meanwhile, she actively seeks out auditions to gain visibility in the industry. Lin balances her aspirations with her role as creative director at Chill Movement, a social wellness collective known for organizing community events. Additionally, she leads her six-member band, Lucky You, which recently performed at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix after winning a competition for emerging local talents. Their first original single, “Can’t Stay Can’t Go,” is set to release on Spotify soon.
Lin humorously likened herself to an octopus, stating, “I feel like we have such a short time on earth; we might as well try everything.” This perspective reflects her commitment to exploring various creative avenues.
Charting Her Own Course
Despite the potential advantages of having celebrity parents, Lin’s family emphasized the importance of earning her achievements through hard work. “When I was younger, I told them I really wanted to get into show business. Can you guys push me out there?” Lin recalled. They advised her that any opportunities should come from her own efforts rather than being attributed to their influence. This guidance has shaped her approach to her career.
Lin recognizes the challenges of stepping out from her father’s shadow, stating, “I don’t want to be seen as Darren Lim’s daughter my whole life.” Her goal is to establish her own identity as a performer grounded in her dedication and talent. “It’s not nepotism or anything,” she asserted, reinforcing her commitment to authenticity in her career.
Her parents’ support continues to inspire her, with their advice resonating deeply. “They’ve always told me to follow my dreams, and I think that’s super important, especially in the entertainment line,” she explained. “Make sure that you have that passion to keep going, even though there are other people out there who are getting more attention.”
As Kristen Lin embarks on her journey in showbiz, her blend of talent, determination, and family support positions her well for a promising future in the entertainment landscape.
