POWERCHINA Champions Local Empowerment for Global Growth
Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is making significant strides in global infrastructure development by prioritizing local empowerment and cultural collaboration. As the Company operates projects across six continents, it focuses on fostering connections that promote cultural exchange and inclusive growth. Through various initiatives, POWERCHINA demonstrates its commitment to the communities it serves, building trust through action rather than hierarchy.
In a recent initiative, the Company emphasizes local employment and cross-cultural integration. For instance, Maqbul, an engineer from Bangladesh, shared his experience working under a Chinese supervisor who demonstrated respect through simple yet meaningful actions. During meetings, the supervisor stood until Maqbul was invited to sit, acknowledging his seniority. “You are at least 10 years senior,” the supervisor explained, highlighting a mutual respect that fosters a sense of pride and belonging among employees.
Cultural Collaboration and Community Engagement
POWERCHINA actively embraces cultural diversity as a means to enhance cooperation. The Company organizes cultural festivals and bilingual celebrations in locations such as Dubai and Brazil. Events honoring traditions like Ramadan and Chinese New Year serve to bridge cultural gaps while promoting mutual respect. Monthly birthday celebrations further contribute to a sense of community among employees.
Language classes and heritage talks play a crucial role in supporting a unified workplace. The Company also empowers local professionals by appointing them to key technical and managerial roles. In Vietnam, local engineers are integral to strategic planning, benefiting from partnerships with leading universities to cultivate globally minded talent. Ngo Thi Cam Tu, Deputy General Director, noted that elevating local staff to leadership roles has enhanced communication and project execution.
In Brazil, Tharcizio, the Country Representative, emphasized how local professionals are given essential management roles, improving integration and decision-making in collaboration with their Chinese counterparts.
Commitment to Local Laws and Environmental Standards
POWERCHINA’s respect for local laws and governance is evident in its adherence to labor laws and environmental regulations. Jnana Ranjan Pradhan, a marine site engineer in Dubai, underscored the Company’s strict compliance regarding necessary permits for marine dredging. During Ramadan, POWERCHINA accommodates local customs by adjusting work hours and providing prayer spaces.
In Côte d’Ivoire, project employee Alex Freddy noted that open discussions regarding labor contracts reflect the Company’s commitment to respecting local employment systems. This approach fosters trust and transparency, enhancing employee satisfaction.
The Company’s dedication to community welfare is further demonstrated through its involvement in local health initiatives. In Lesotho, POWERCHINA collaborated with a Chinese medical team to provide free health services to employees and nearby villagers. Project employee Sechaba Masekhoane described how his first experience with acupuncture brought relief and reinforced his sense of the Company’s care for its workforce.
These stories collectively illustrate how POWERCHINA is transforming respect into relationships, diversity into collaboration, and challenges into shared success. By building a global team rooted in trust and mutual growth, the Company exemplifies a model of inclusive development that resonates across cultures and communities.
